The first programming languages predate the modern electronic computer.

Ada Lovelace specified in complete detail a method for calculating Bernouli numbers with Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine in 1943.

The first electronic computer programming language was called Assembly Language and this was how programs were written in the 1940's.

However, Alick Glennie, working at the University of Manchester in England developed a language called Autocode in the early 1950s and this is recognised as the first COMPILED programming language.

Another early programming language was devised by Grace Hopper in the US between 1955 and 1959, this was called FLOW-MATIC.

Why is it important to understand computer languages?

It is not essential to understand computer languages as you can do a lot with a computer without knowing them, and most people that use computers do not understand any computer languages. However, if you want to write programs and get the computers to do more elaborate things then knowing some computer languages is important. If you can write programs then there are employment opportunities in it and if you are really good you could create a really good program and do very well out of it.
