The United Nations geoscheme recognises 19 territories to be part of an area known as East Africa. However, two of these territories are not countries, but are French overseas territories (Réunion and Mayotte). So, the 17 UN recognised countries of East Africa are Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
