The Alps and the Apennines are the major mountain ranges in Italy. The Alps run in a west-to-east arc from the Cadibona Pass to north of Trieste, at the head of the Adriatic Sea. The Apennines run down the Italian peninsula from the Cadibona Pass to the tip of Calabria and continue on the island of Sicily.
The major ranges are: The Alps, running east-west in the north and the Appenines, running south along the peninsula south of the Po River Valley down to the "boot heel."
There is also a "volcanic range" consisting of Vesuvius, outside Naples, running south thru the Mediterranean Sea (Stromboli), to Mt. Etna, on the Island of Sicily.
