Many people survived but few ships survived including the USS Enterprise, one of America's most powerful aircraft carriers. The death tole totaled 2403 service men and civilians and was is a date to be remembered forever or as FDR put it, a date which will live in infamy- the event that brings America into the war and eventually destroys the great nation of Japan
As an Honorary Member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association,(PHSA) for more than 10 years now, I've been asked this question many, many times.
Because there are quite a few Survivors who never became members of the actual PHSA, the exact number of living Survivors nation-wide can only be estimated.... and at this time, the "official guess" is somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 Survivors still alive.
Most major cities in the U.S. have a chapter of the PHSA, but sadly, because of their advancing ages and other health issues, many chapters have had to close their doors.
Likewise, there are still many chapters across the country that are very active, such as Carnation Chapter 3 in San Diego, CA and Silver State Chapter 2 in Las Vegas, NV.
