Pet rats make WONDERFUL pets. They crave attention and love, just like a dog or cat. The are clean Andy will ouse a little pan happily. Rats usually live for two to three years but if on a great diet they may live for five or more. Rat diets need to be LOW IN PROTEIN! I recommend Oxbow Regal Rat or Innova Senior Adult Dog Food. Rats are very social animals. A pair of two or more same sex rats is highly suggested. Each rat needs at LEAST two and a half cubic feet. Martin's Cages makes wonderful cages for ratties!
Rats need TOYS, just like a toddler. Rope and wood bird toys are great. So are ferret toys (tunnels, hammocks, ect). DO NOT buy hamster or mice toys. Your rats will chew right thru them. www.dapperrat.com.au has great toy ideas.
Pro's and con's of getting a rat form certain places:
Pet stores:
Pro: rats there are often fuzzlets (babies)
Cons: rat there are bread for snake food and will almost always die with a day of purchase.
Don't get a rat from a pet store.
RMCA breeder:
Pros: Rat are well socialized. Many different verities (i.e. Dumbo, hairless...)Cons: Hard to find a good breeder. Breeder don't always have fuzzlets for sale.Great place to get a rat.
Local humane society:
Pros: you're saving a LIFE!
Cons: Local SPCA often don't get rat very often.
Good place to get a rat.
Small animal rescue groups:
Pros: Rats are socialized. Rescue will almost always offer help getting rat situated. You're saving a LIFE!!
Cons: Small animal rescues often don't have the specific type you want (i.e. Dumbo)
