Looking at a modest windlass used to raise the anchor of, say, a mid-sized motor yacht, we'll have some kind of electric motor to drive it. This will usually have a foot switch that actuates a solenoid to run the motor. The motor will drive a gear or gear set to spin the main drive shaft. This will drive the gypsy (which is used to engage the chain) through a clutch of some kind. There will be a locking mechanism of sorts as well as a manual recovery option, which will allow the anchor to be "ratcheted" or "hand cranked" and recovered. A housing of some kind will cover or enclose most of the working parts.
A windlass is used to move heavy weights. They usually have a horizontal barrel that is turned with a belt or handle.
Windsor means 'a landing place with a windlass'. The town of Windsor is situated on the River Thames, an important transport route. A windlass is a hoisting device using a horizontal roller which when turned, winds a rope around itself. Thus useful for hauling boats ashore
The horizontal and vertical parts of a vector are called components
A capstan is a vertical axel, rotating machine developed for use on sailing ships to wind up ropes, cables, and hawsers. The principle is similar to that of the windlass, which has a horizontal axle
A windlass is a type of winch, fitted with a wildcat for hauling chain, and/or a gypsy for rope. Windlasses have horizontal drums or wheels for handling heavy anchor chains, hawsers, etc. From what I can tell, it comes from the Old Norse for winding things around a pole: Vin and ass.
Windlass is made of a bucket, rope, and a long piece of straight, round, strong timber
The windlass was not very successful in the 1850's because it only went into a hole...That is all
A windlass is used to move heavy weights - and is sometimes used on boats to raise an anchor.
Horizontal, vertical, lateral
Divide it into equal parts with horizontal or vertical lines.

A Chinese windlass is a type of hand-powered winch used for lifting heavy objects. It consists of a drum or cylinder around which a rope is wound, with a handle or lever for turning the drum to raise or lower the load. Chinese windlasses have been used for centuries in various applications such as agriculture and construction.
