A derrick is a drilling, crane-type machine used in on-shore oil drilling operations. The derrick is a large metal tower made out of a pattern of metal tubing called lattice. In the center of the machine is a trolley that can carry whatever tool used for mining. For drilling into the ground the tool is obviously a drill that is dropped from that top of the tower for more force. After the oil drilling is completed the tower is used as the oil spout. If you've ever been to Butte, Montana you'd see these large towers all over the town.
