Unless a woman uses fertility awareness method she cannot know when she is fertile or not, thus she must assume she is always fertile and use appropriate Birth Control to prevent unintended pregnancy. In theory she is not fertile before menstruation (ovulation typically occurs two weeks before menstruation, and there is only a viable egg for up to 48 hours maximum), but she may be fertile after menstruation if there is fertile cervical mucus present or if she ovulates earlier in her cycle.
