Priests come from the tribe of Levi [pronounced lay-vee].

Originally, the first born males from all 12 tribes were to be Cohanim [pronounced co-ha-neem, plural]. However, during the incident of the golden calf during the exodus from Egypt, not a single male from the tribe of Levi participated in this idolatry while males from the 11 other tribes did. As a result, HaShem (The Creator) deemed only the Levi males to be fit for priesthood.

Today, there is no high priest and priests, however, men who come from the Cohan lineage do have special roles in religious services.

In the Biblical Age, Ancient Israel had Priests called Kohanim (literally Hebrew for "Priests") who oversaw the sacrifices in the Great Temple and passed this position to their children. The Kohanim still exist today as the descendants of those Priests and commonly have the last name of Cohen or some variant to indicate their ancestry.
