Pros are that they are extremely affectionate to their owners. Their world revolves around you, to be loved by a chihauhua is to be truly loved unconditionally. They wil follow you around the house from one room to the other, mine always has to know where I am and I've gotten used to hearing her little paws on the floor when she's behind me. They are great guard dogs...some call them yappy, but that's only because their bark is higher pitched. All dogs barks, but for some reason Chihuahua's have been labelled as "yappy". There's very little grooming...bathing, brushing and combing for the coat. Nails to be trimmed and ears to be cleaned. They don't cost a fortune to feed. They are playful, inquisitive, affectionate...all the things other dogs are. But because of their size it's much easier to cuddle and coddle them, so the bond you make with a chihuahua is extremely close. The cons are that there some health problems in some, not all chihuahua's. Some are hyperglycemic, some have trachea problems, and some have luxatting patela's. Mine has some trachea problems...when she get's excited she gasps for breath...it's called a reverse cough. But once she's calmed down, she's fine. It's kept under control by using a harness when walking her. Chihuahua's should never ever be walked with a collar. Their necks are so small and delicate that air supply can easily be cut off. My chihuahua has also suffered luxating patella's in the past. When she was a puppy and her bones hadn't finished growing yet her knee's would pop out of the caps and she'd limp. She had to be taken to the vet several times for this. She had x-ray's done and no permanent damage. Today at the age of 4 she very rarely has a problem with her knees. Hyperglycemia is low blood sugar, and most people keep karo syrup on hand. If a chihuahua goes into a seizure they simply rub some syrup on the chi's gums and tongue. There are pro's and con's to owning any dog...but when it comes to a chi the pro's outweigh the cons. Just make sure that if you get a chi you have the time to spend with it...that's their favorite thing in the world...just to spend time with you.
Chihuahua dogs make great pets. Some of the pros include they are a small breed so they don't require a lot of space, they are loyal and friendly. Cons include being sensitive to cold temperatures and some bark a lot.
