One pro to having a fur coat is that it is warm. The cons far outweigh the pros, however. A serious con to a fur coat is that an animal has to die for someone to own one. The more animals that have to be killed for one coat means that a species might become extinct.

There are no pros for killing animals for fur unless there is no other choice in how to get a warm coat. The cons of killing animals for fur is that much of the animal is wasted and the animal can eventually become extinct.

"Putting an animal to sleep" usually means killing a pet (or at least a domesticated species) in a humane fashion (euthanasia) by intravenous injection of drugs to cause unconsciousness followed by respiratory and cardiac arrest -- just to be clear.

Unfortunately, millions of healthy dogs and cats in the Unites States are put to sleep (or "put down") by animal shelters and pounds with no financial means to support the large number of abandoned or lost pets they receive. So the advantage in this case is that it is a better solution than having millions of feral cats and dogs roaming the country.

In addition, animals that attack human beings can also be put to sleep in order to prevent future attacks. This is mandated in some states.

But in the ordinary sense, putting an animal to sleep is the most difficult and emotional choice an owner must make.

Many pets today live long enough to suffer from what would be considered "normal" old-age afflictions in humans, such as Arthritis, cataracts, Heart disease, cancer, etc. In addition, pure-bred animals have their own varieties of ailments specific to their breed, often due to reinforcement of "bad genes" through (intended) inbreeding of a relatively small genetic pool (mixed-breed or "mutt" animals are often longer-lived than their pure-bred counterparts; another reason to adopt!). These factors mean pain and/or disability.

Alternatively, accidents (usually involving vehicles) can cause significant damage to a pet with similar consequences: pain and/or disability.

Most owners will choose to put a pet to sleep when the animal ceases to "be itself" due to that pain or disability (or if it suffered an accident which is unlikely to allow it to live "normally"). The rationale is that the animal is suffering, and the time it takes to die naturally will only be time without any enjoyment of life (for the pet). Often the decision to put an animal to sleep is delayed in the hopes that the animal will become its "old self" again, which is why the advice of a vet who has past experience with the animal when it was healthy (and knowledge of its afflictions) can be helpful.

Others prefer to see "nature take its course" and believe that the only "right" time for an animal to die is when it dies of its own accord, with no outside action. The advantage to this attitude is that the animal will never be mistakenly killed when there was a chance of recovery.
