Children that are just a few months old to a year should never be lifted and tossed into the air. Many people do this as the baby may giggle, but it could do neck and spinal damage. Carrying a 1 - 2 year old should be arm under the buttocks and other arm supporting the back with hand cupping the lower part of the head or the neck area. Same things for 3 - 4 year olds.
