Roman Catholic AnswerThat would depend a lot on where he lived, and what he was bishop of. Some bishops were veritable princes, they came from good families and lived as they had grown up. Other bishops were remarkable holy men, living more like a monk or religious priest than a prince. The Bishop, himself, would have secular rights over the people in his district depending on how the local government was set up. A lot depended on where he was, and who the local ruler was, that kind of thing. Remember there was not a lot of traveling around back then, and there was none of the modern communication that we take for granted: no telephones, no computers, no regular mail service in many areas, etc.
