Well there are 3 sensors in my 1983 280ZX and I suspect it's the same with yours.
There is a thermotime switch, which measures the temp and sends a signal to the fan when the ignition is turned off I think. There is a water temp sensor. Then there is a thermal transmitter which sends the temp information to the dashboard in my digital dash. I really don't know how close this matches your 77 though.
It's usually screwed into the intake manifold towards the front, near the thermostat housing.

That elbow pipe ( thermostat housing ) has 2 bolts in it, take them out and remove the housing ( you may have to tap it with a rubber mallet) be sure to have a new gasket ready and remove all traces of the old one before reassembly.
