It really depends on each individual pets situation. They can become withdrawn, seemingly lazy but in fact cannot move, thirst, sleepy or lack there of, breathing difficulties of various types, not eating, lose weight, bathroom habits change or cannot control themselves, or even develop sores that do not heal on their feet for example. You will be able to tell if you look into your pets eyes and see..........

I new when it was time for my Jack Russell Terrier ( let alone he was 20yrs) long full life but you will know.......

I'm no vet, but have had a few dogs cross the bridge. Failure to eat or at least drink for more than 2 days is not a good sign. Lethargy isn't so good either, but older dogs tend to sleep a lot more. Walking a few paces and then dropping is unfavorable. Excessive panting and pale gums is a sign of distress and/or dehydration. It's always difficult to deal with impending death. But I always say that your heart will tell you when it's time to let them go. Let it lead you.

The symptoms of a dying dog are running eyes, unable to eat any food, low energy level, panting when the weather is not hot, tail between legs, weakness, white and lifeless gum. Dogs have a much shorter lifespan compare to human being.
