This is an interesting question. Many religions honor their dead with funeral services or rites. I believe that most of these traditions started more as an honor to the God that they served. Similar to an offering of sorts. Honoring the God by giving them the spirit of their dead. Please their God and their loved one will get to enter the afterlife. Some religions, like the Buddhist I believe, use chanting by monks to guide the spirits of the dead through The Temptations of a sort of pergatory and into their next reincarnate life. Some religions, mostly of the less civilized tribes and cultures, perform ceremonies to appease the dead in fear that the dead might come back to haunt or curse them. Some religions believed in preserving the dead so that their bodies could be used in the afterlife. I think most religions, be it earthen burial, sky burial or cremation believe that the body is a shell for a spirit which has passed on and should be returned to the earth from which it came.
It should be, because it will come up later.
I know of one country where all religions are allowed to be practiced and the poorest among the poorest also are living - that is India, the largest democracy of the world
