To make setup easy, choose a network adapter made by the same vendor that made your wireless router. For example, if you find a good price on a Linksys router, choose a Linksys network adapter to go with it. To make shopping even easier, buy a bundle, such as those available from Linksys, Actiontec, D-Link, Netgear, Microsoft, and Buffalo. If you have a desktop computer, make sure that you have an available USB port where you can plug in the wireless network adapter. If you don't have any open USB ports, buy a USB hub to add additional ports.

I have highspeed internet service on my desktop thru comcast; & now just purchased a laptap with wireless capability. How do I get wireless internet service in my new laptap?

If you have a laptop with wireless capabilities, you do not have to change your internet provider or notify anyone at all. All you need to do is purchase a wireless modem/router. If your current modem/router does not have wireless capabilities, you'll need to replace your current modem/router with a wireless one. Once your new modem/router is hooked up (change out the new modem/router with the old one), refer to the manual that comes with your laptop that will walk you through the steps on setting everything up. (it will most likely have you go to your laptop computer and click on "network connections," and there should be a "wizard" that pops up to help you)

Can you get free wi fi for the ipod touch?

If you have a high speed internet, just buy a wireless router (or use your neighbors if they don't mind) and attach it to your modem, and follow all of the setup steps for your router to make it a wireless router. An iPod Touch works with pretty much any wireless router. However, you still must pay your high speed internet bill.

Finding the Right Wireless Router?

In the world of consumer electronics, few items are as important as the wireless router. So much is done over the internet these days, and it is becoming an even more important resource every day. The problem with traditional internet connections is that they wire you to the wall and this can be difficult if you want the freedom to move around and get work done. A wireless router takes care of that issue by creating a wireless internet zone that your computer can use to connect to the internet. However, there are a few things you should consider before buying a wireless router.First, you should keep in mind that a wireless router injects a few inherent security risks into your web browsing. Since information is not transmitted through a hardline, it is easier for hackers to get into your computer and give you viruses. However, you can take care of this through using an encrypted connection, and a password protected router connection. This will really help you to make sure that your information is not being intercepted by anyone that you don't authorize. This also leads into the next important thing to think about with your router. If you live in an apartment building or a suburban area where houses are very close together, you should factor that into your wireless router decision. Different routers have different levels of strength, and some will be easily found by the wireless adapters of computers in other houses. If you want to help eliminate the visibility of your network to your neighbors, you should buy a wireless router that has a lower recognition zone. This way, you can make sure that your router is only recognizable by computers that are inside your home, further increasing your network security.Wireless routers are an amazing new technology that has really revolutionized the way people surf the internet. However, just like any other advancement in technology, that revolution has come with an added need to take more steps toward protecting your information. When you take these basic steps, you are doing a lot to protect yourself and the integrity of your information.

Installing a Wireless DSL Modem?

Installing a wireless DSL modem is a simple process, and in this article you will learn the steps that need to be taken for proper installation. • If you have not purchased your wireless modem, then you must understand one thing first. When you are selecting a unit, know that modems with the longest ranges are the 802.11 N modems, and the middle of the road is 802.11G. There are also dual band modems which have both N and G frequencies, so know what you need before you purchase a modem. • Once you have purchased your modem and brought it home, plug the power cord into an outlet. You also want to plug in the cable connecting the modem box to the wireless router. By making this connection, you are ensuring that the internet is provided to the router. • You will then want to install the software that came with the modem. Installing the software will give you access to manage the modem and create different settings and roles for different computers or wireless devices. • Once you have downloaded the software, turn the power on to the wireless device in which you want to gain access to using the router. It is important to know that any device that you want to connect your modem with must have a Wi-Fi card installed or attached, or it will have to be plugged directly into the router or modem itself. • Once you have turned the device on, turn on the Wi-Fi option so the device can pick up the new router. You will want to select the new router or modem as the default set up, so you are able to access the internet wirelessly. This also allows multiple users to access the internet at the same time. Once you have followed these steps, your new wireless DSL modem should be set up to access the internet between two or more devices. You are able to use this process for setting up the wireless router to connect with gaming systems, cameras, laptops, desktop computers and even telephones. Just make sure that whatever the device is, that is has a Wi-Fi card already installed or attached, or you have a lot of extra Ethernet cable laying around.

How do you establish a hotspot for sharing the internet surfing with my colleague by a http-proxy needed wired lan connection and a wireless adapter using a laptop with XP or Vista?

Every wireless connection has to have a Wireless Access Point (WAP), Wi-fi, hotspots at Starbucks etc. all have a WAP setup. If you want to set up your own you need to buy a WAP, in the form of a router. Routers only cost about $40 and that's all you need if you already have wireless capability on your computers. When looking for a router get one that is 802.11b/g compatible. If you have to decide between b and g go with g, it has five times the bandwidth of 802.11b. You'll get some software with the router which walks you thru the steps to set it up and within 30 minutes you'll be wireless and all your buds can cruise the internet or play games.

How do you put a security Password on your wireless internet?

Your wireless network name, known as the SSID. This name identifies your network. You should choose something unique that none of your neighbors will be using. 2. Wireless encryption (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), which help protect your wireless network. For most routers, you will provide a passphrase that your router uses to generate several keys. Make sure your passphrase is unique and long (you don't need to memorize it). 3. Your administrative password, which controls your wireless network. Just like any other password, it should not be a word that you can find in the dictionary, and it should be a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Be sure you can remember this password, because you'll need it if you ever have to change your router's settings. The exact steps you follow to configure these settings will vary depending on the type of router you have. After each configuration setting, be sure to click Save Settings, Apply, or OK to save your changes.
