RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevate) is the sequence taken when dealing with

sprain and strain injuries.

The area should be rested.

Ice should be applied to reduce swelling.

Compression/ pressure should be applied to the area to also reduce swelling.

The area should be elevated to furthermore reduce swelling to the area.

RICE is an acronym (meaning each letter stands for something). RICE is used to remember how to initially treat a sprain, strain or fracture.

R.I.C.E. is an acronym for the most important elements to reduce swelling after an injury.

  • R - Rest means sit down or lie down
  • I - Ice means put an ice pack on the area
  • C - Compression means apply an ace bandage to a joint/limb
  • E - Elevation means put the injured part up on two pillows

Though not part of the standard RICE procedure, you can add S - Sling, for an injured shoulder or upper arm.

There are no real steps to use RICE. It helps if a second person can grab the ice and ace bandage, but if you are alone you might need to grab those before you can begin R-- to rest, C - to compress, and E - to elevate.

Well, the purpose of the First aid kit guide probably just so you can have a quick look through it if you have trained or is training to be a first aider and could help you along the way! In a lot of places such as schools, construction sites, general industries, etc. first aid treatments training are already being given to employees in case of emergencies but in those industries, first aid kits are already required.
