∙ 8y agoR.I.C.E. is an acronym for the most important elements to reduce swelling after an injury.
- R - Rest means sit down or lie down
- I - Ice means put an ice pack on the area
- C - Compression means apply an ace bandage to a joint/limb
- E - Elevation means put the injured part up on two pillows
Though not part of the standard RICE procedure, you can add S - Sling, for an injured shoulder or upper arm.
There are no real steps to use RICE. It helps if a second person can grab the ice and ace bandage, but if you are alone you might need to grab those before you can begin R-- to rest, C - to compress, and E - to elevate.
