Answers.com won't let me edit my above answer but I realize I made a couple mistakes so here is the revised version:

The second amendment gives us the right to bear arms, this historical document was constructed just a few years after the Revolutionary war when the US won its freedom from the British. They started fighting for their freedom because of the oppression and tyranny that was being imposed via taxation (primarily) from the British monarchy. The second amendment is in the Constitution to give us a way the fight back against that tyranny should it ever resurge either from the British back in the 18th century or from within our own government today or in the future.
