The movement of tectonic plates causes earthquakes. There are three types of plate movement. The first is Divergent Boundaries (pulling apart), Covergent Boundaries (coming together), and Transform Boundaries. When these boundaries move, huge amounts of energy are unleashed. This results in tremors that can change the Earth's surface.
