I gave my oldest repair manual away to a friend who has a 1967 cougar, so this information is for a 1970, VIN - Y - 5th digit ( 390 - 2 barrel -265 H.P. - in a 1970 Mercury. Ignition timing 10 degrees before top dead center -auto & manual trans Point dwell - 27 degrees Point gap - .021 inch Original spark plugs BF-42 gapped at .034 inch, also A 1970 Ford, VIN - Y - 5th digit (390 - 2 barrel - 270 H.P.- in a 1970 Ford Ignition timing 6 degrees before top dead center - auto & manual trans Point dwell - 24 to 29 degrees (1) Point gap - .021 inches (1) ( 1 )-For engines equipped with single diaphragm distributors adjust point dwell to 26 - 31 degrees and point gap to .017 inch ) Original spark plugs BF-42 gapped at .034 inch This should put you in the ballpark.
