Bavaria, Black Forrest, Rhine region

Tourism in Germany is definitely concentrated in Bavaria. Bavaria is one of the16 German states and it is located in the SE. It stretches from the alps in the south to the Bavarian forest in the north. The state is divided into different regions. Franconia (in the north)/Franconian Switzerland (nothing to do with the country), Bavarian Palatinate (nothing to do with the state of Palatinate), upper Bavaria (in the south) and lower Bavaria (close to the border with the Check republic). Each region is subsequently subdivided into plenty of areas and districts, each with a different dialect, architecture and landscape. The Romantische Strasse (romantic road) seems to attract lots of tourists. It's a very nice road trip that starts from Füssen in the Alps (with the famous castles of Neuschweinstein-AKA the Cindarella Castle) and goes up to Würzburg the monumental town capital of Franconia with its Residenz Palace, the castle and the nice downtown along the river Main. Along the Romantische strasse you can pas through a multitude of small, picturesque, colorful towns full of Fachwerk houses (typical German architecture). Most of them stem from the middle ages and still maintained the original structure. They are surrounded by walls and towers. A few of them include Nördlingen (the circular town built in a crater whose church was built with part of the meteor), Dinkelsbühl, the very famous Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The route is a peaceful country road along the river Tauber passing through hills and forests. Simply magical!

Other roads in Bavaria are the Deutsche Alpen strasse (along the alps with incredible panoramas), the Märchenstrasse (fairy tale road) Grimm brothers strasse, Fachwerkstrasse (which then goes into the state of Hessen). Worth a visit are also towns like Nurnberg, Landshut, Regensburg and obviously the capaital Munich. Munich is a fantastic middle-European town full of castles, parks, palaces, fountains and nice restaurants. The area around Munich is famous due to its 350 lakes and wonderful monasteries (with gorgeous breweries) and beautiful little towns.

As mentioned also the Black Forest is quite popular (home to the cuckoo clocks). It is located in Baden Würtenberg (a south eastern state). The biggest and nicest town is Freiburg. Aroundthe town there are lots of nice little towns and you can start from here to explore the Black Forrest hicking through a magnificent hilly region which represents the green heart of Europe.

The Rhein region is popular as well. Düsseldorf and Cologne are beautiful towns. The other towns in the region are quite industrial and not very attractive. But it's definetely worth spending some time cruising along the Rheine. There are plenty of companies organizing cruises with very nice ships stopping in very cute towns. There are several castles to visit and lots of romantic stories and tales to listen to.

Worth mentioning is also Heidelberg. The capital of wine in Germany. Sorrounded by hills and vineyards this medieval town, home to one of the greatest European universities, resembles pretty much all the stereotypical images of a German town.

Completely different is the north part of the country. The architecture, the language, the people and the landscape reminds you more of Scandinavian regions such as Denmark or Sweden. No big beer mugs, no pretzels, no lederhosen and no wurst, but fish, light beer in neat glasses, seafood, windmills , lighthouses and hay roofs. People are traditionally fishermen and the whole atmosphere is typical of maritime regions like in Norway, Scotland or eastern Canada. nice towns: Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck, Rostock, Oldenburg and the islands, the peninsula of Sylt and the areas around Flensburg and Kiel.
