(1) A lymph is transported back to the blood stream, the lymph nodes act as lymph "filters" Macrophages in the nodes remove and destroy microorganisms and other debri that enter the lymph from the loose connective tissues, effectively preventing them from being delivered to the blood and spreading to other parts of the body. (2) They help activate the immune system. Lymph nodes and other lymphoid organs are strategically located sites where lymphocytes encounter antigens and are activated to mount an attack against them.

What are two structures that are shared by the blood and the lymphatic system?

These two structures are the lymph nodes and the spleen.

What are the two major structures of the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system includes organs and cells that filter lymph and blood and destroy foreign microorganisms. Lymph leaks out of capillaries to bathe body cells and circulates among tissue cells and the heart. Organs of the lymphatic system contain lymphatic tissue, Lymphocytes, a few other cell types, and connective tissue.

What does the human lymphatic system consists of?

There are two parts to the lymphatic system, the lymph vessels and the lymph nodes. The vessels carry excess interstitial fluid away to the vena cava just before it enters the heart. These vessels run through the lymph nodes. The nodes produce lymphocytes that piggyback the lymph flow to join the blood circulation.

What are the 2 major functions of the lymph nodes?

To return to the circulatory system the fluid that leaked out from the capillaries and that wasn't returned to the veins. To filter out any bacteria/viruses by leaving them in the lymph nodes, where an immune response is mounted and they're killed.

How many lymphnodes in the human body?

the lymphatic system is a very complex and intricate system with many lymphatic tissues, the most common of them being: the lymph nodes. They are usually clustered in the cervical, axillary, popliteal, cubital and inguinal regions. Thus, they are dispersed throughout the body relatively evenly. The lymphatic system has two main roles: to return interstitial fluid back to the blood circulation, and it also has an immune function. Lymph nodes are small fitering structures that filter the lymph fluid and then it is returned to the blood. Any foriegn bodies or debris are stopped at the lymph node and macrophages and other lymphocytes are deployed for phagocytosis. They kill and ingest the forigen particles. Hence, a lymph node usually gets swollen after an infection as the lymphocytes have acummulated and are fighting it. Thus, lymph nodes help to prevent the spread of disease throughout the body and act as part of a defence mechanism. Hence, it is very important to have many lymph nodes dispersed in the body as a defence mechanism should there be an infection. Despite the slow movement of lymph itself, if a pathogenic cell was to circulate through the body, infection would spread and because the lymphatic system is closely linked with the circulatory system, the pathogenic cell will also travel through the bloodstream and can reach any part of the body. Lymph nodes are also the maturation site of various lymphocytes. Lymph nodes become hazardous when a carcinogenic cell is trapped and begins to proliferate in the slow moving fluid at a lymph node. it slowly travels from node to node until the lymphoma spreads. In these cases, the lymph nodes affected are best to be removed in order to prevent further spreading of the cancer. hope this helps. i am a first year PT student from australia.

Is a lymph node a function?

I don't think so. I believe it is a filter for the lymphatic system. In anatomy and physiology the two terms are used to define a structure, or its anatomy or describe its function, or physiology. As for lymph nodes, they are specialized tissues whose main purpose is to filter and cleanse lymphatic fluid. So, the structure is lymphatic tissue and the function is to purify lymph. The two terms are always associated with each other, though for convenience and clarity can be discussed together. So, whatever you were researching that brought up that question for you the way you asked it makes me think that there is some more information for you to uncover that will help you understand those concepts better.

What is a small soft tissue lump on the right side of your neck about three inches down and to the left of your ear and could it be lymph nodes in that area and should you be worried?

See a doctor and get a proper diagnosis. It could be anything from a harmless cyst to a lymph node. Our lymph nodes are everywhere in our bodies and in some individuals these lymph nodes are working harder as a filtering system in your body. My girlfriend had two swollenlymph nodesunder her chin and they were removed and not cancerous! People with many allergies can get this. It's best to let a specialist look at this lump. Don't be afraid as it's usually nothing that can't be fixed.
