What is the function of balancing line in a centrifugal pump or compressor?

The balancing line is a transmission line consisting of two conductors of the same type, that are grounded to the compressor's circuits and to the ground and helps keep external noise down.

What is the disadvantages of centrifugal compressor?

A centrifugal pump cannot pump air, therefore cannot self prime, like a positive displacement pump.

What is an hermetic compressor?

a fully welded or serviceableIn hermetically sealed compressor, the compressor and the motor are enclosed in the welded steel casing and the two are connected by a common shaft. This makes the whole compressor and the motor a single compact and portable unit that can be handled easily. The hermetically sealed compressor is very different from the traditional open type of compressors in which the compressor and the motor are different entities and the compressor is connected to the motor by coupling or belt.Construction of the Hermetically Sealed Reciprocating CompressorIn hermetically sealed compressor, in one side of the enclosed casing the various parts of the compressor like cylinder, piston, connecting rod and the crankshaft are located. If it is a multi-cylinder compressor, there are more than two cylinders inside the casing. On the other side of the casing is the electric winding inside which the shaft of the motor rotates. This motor can be single speed or multi-speed motor. In hermetically sealed compressors the crankshaft of the reciprocating compressor and the rotating shaft of the motor are common. The rotating shaft of the motor extends beyond the motor and forms the crankshaft of the hermetically sealed reciprocating compressor. All these parts of the hermetically sealed compressor are assembled and enclosed in a strong and rigid casing made up of welded steel shell. The steel shell comprises of two half rounded steel bodies that are welded together to form the casing for the hermetically sealed compressor. In some cases the two halves of the shell can be bolted together instead of welding, which permits easy opening of the casing in case of compressor burnout. The hermetically sealed compressors have inbuilt lubrication system for the lubrication of the piston and cylinder and crankshaft. The lubricant also acts the coolant for the piston and cylinder. Additionally, the cool suction refrigerant also offers cooling effect. Externally, the casing has refrigerant suction and discharge connections that are connected to the evaporator and condenser respectively. There is also socket for the electrical connection. The typical condenser unit with the hermetically sealed compressor is shown in above fig. Such condenser units are called as hermetic condenser units. In the other image various parts of hermetically sealed multi-cylinder reciprocating compressor are shown.Types of Hermetic CompressorsOne of the most popular types of the hermetically sealed compressors are the reciprocating compressors. They were the first to be used as the hermetically sealed compressors are still being used widely. These days the vane type of rotary compressor has become more popular. It is considered that the rotary type of hermetically sealed compressor consumes less electricity, makes lesser noise, requires lesser maintenance, and is cheaper than the reciprocating type of hermetically sealed compressor. This is because the rotary compressors has less frictional parts and have only a rotor. The centrifugal types of hermetically sealed compressor are used for the large units.

What is surging in axial compressors?

Surge is defined as the operating point at which the compressor peak head capability and minimum flow limit are reached. The compressor loses the ability to maintain the peak head when surge occurs and the entire system becomes unstable. Under normal conditions, the compressor operates to the right of the surge line. However, as fluctuations in flow rate occur, or under startup / emergency shutdown, the operating point will move towards the surge line because flow is reduced. If conditions are such that the operating point approaches the surge line, the impeller and diffuser begin to operate in stall and flow recirculation occurs. The flow separation will eventually cause a decrease in the discharge pressure and flow from suction to discharge will resume. This is defined as the surge cycle of the compressor. The surge cycle will repeat itself unless control systems are installed or operational changes are made to bring the compressor out of the surge cycle. The surge cycle may result in a small or large flow reversal period depending on the discharge gas volume and the pressure ratio. Chronic surge is characterized by intermittent periods of small flow reversal that may not cause severe damage to the machine. Acute surge is more pronounced, usually due to a rapid transition across the surge line. Any surge event can cause severe damage to the thrust bearings, seals, and the impeller.

What happens if a two stage air compressor runs to ong?

It can't run too long. So long as it is adequately lubricated, cooled, and the pressure does not exceed it's relief valve or cutoff switch if it gets too hot, you'll destroy the internal seals, requiring a teardown. no lube, and you'll simply destroy it.

Give appropriate comparison between piston and screw compressors?

Yes a two stage Piston Compressor will be much economical than a single stage screw compressor.

What does a stage air compressor do?

A stage air compressor is a heavy duty compressor that increases the amount of air is a tight, confined space. It uses two cylinders and two pistons; one piston pumps air from the first cylinder into the second cylinder, creating air pressure. This pressure is used to provide power for industrial, commercial, and personal uses. You can find a picture and detailed diagram of a stage air compressor at www.ecompressedair.com.

Storing your Air Compressor?

To complete your ultimate garage workshop you purchased an air compressor to complete your power tool collection. But where do you put it? What kind of air compressor you have will determine where to place this important piece of machinery. If you purchased a single-stage portable compressor, these are easy to carry or have wheels that allow you to roll it around anywhere in your garage. Many are small enough that you could place them in a baseboard cabinet or under a large workbench so that it is out of your way until you need it. Most portable compressors run off of a standard 120 volt outlet, so you can plug it in anywhere in your work space. But what if you have a larger two-stage air compressor? Because they aren't portable, these beasts need to be as close to a power outlet as possible. In addition, two-stage compressors have much more horsepower than a portable one, and you need to make sure your you're running the compressor through a 220 volt outlet. And while a portable air compressor can be wheeled anywhere out of the way, a two-stage compressor needs a permanent home where it you won't have to work around it. Placing your compressor in the middle of two workbenches may not be the most ideal spot. Instead, place the air compressor in a corner that has a convenient outlet. You can also make your own little closet for your compressor. Just build your enclosure to fit both the compressor and you comfortably. However, if you want to enclose a two-stage air compressor, remember to have adequate ventilation. Since it can not be moved like a portable compressor, it needs to have one or two vents to allow the compressor to take in air and dissipate heat. Whether you decide to get a portable or a two-stage air compressor, be sure you have a place to store it. Giving the compressor a dedicated home will keep it out of the way so that it does not get damaged while you work. When it is kept clean and well maintained, your air compressor will provide you with many years of faithful service.

What is the difference between centrifugal compressor and screw compressors?

A rotary compressor is like a car engine, with pistons, rods, sleeves, valves, etc. A screw compressor has two screw type rotating parts that squeeze the refrigerant as the screw threads get tighter and tighter. They have long life potential.

What type of air compressor that has two pistons?

Why is it desirable to have a two-speed compressor?

The major difference between a 2-stage heat pump and single stage is the run time on 1st stage, especially for the a/c. On 1st stage, the compressor can put out 1/2 to 2/3 of its rated capacity and is more efficient producing btu's than when running full out on 2nd stage. The more the system runs on 1st stage, the lower the operating costs

How are air compressors classified?

The two main classification of Air Compressor are. 01) Positive Displacement Type. 02) Dynamic Type. 01)Positive Displacement Type Air Compressor. Positive displacement types compressor are those who mechanically displace a fixed volume of air into a reduced volume. The constant volume can be delivered by compressor when operated at fixed speed. The discharge pressure is determined by the system load conditions. If the consumption of air is more then discharge pressure falls below the cut-off pressure & compressor works on load condition. Dynamic Type Air Compressor. The Dynamic Type Air Compressors mechanically impart velocity to the air. This action is produced by the Impellers rotating at a high speed,in enclosed casing. The air is forced into a progressively reduced volume. The volumetric flow will vary inversely with the differential pressure across the compressor.
