They have to get an undergrad degree, pass a PLSAT test that is similar to a SAT test, have good grades in school 3.5-4.0, at least to get into a good school, graduate law school in 2-3 years, and finally pass the state bar examination. Then they can go out and be lawyers. Some choose to do clerking work at legal firms while they are in law school or waiting to take their bar examination. Their final step is to be sworn in.
While they are in undergrad work they can choose a specific area that they are interested in to study. Such as Political Science, or if they want to become a specialized attorney they can continue their education beyond the grad work and concentrate on other specifics working at firms.
I have known lawyers that are also MDs or Doctors of medicine who now specialize in mal practice law. Very smart men, very rare and always have had photographic memories and good study habits.
It depends on the state or country they are in. In the US, most require a 4 year college degree, 3 years of law school and passing a writing bar examination.

Marine lawyers specialize in the same types of laws that normal lawyers specialize in. Marine lawyers can specialize in criminal defense just like a normal one would.

Child Lawyers are referred to as Child Custody Attorneys. They handle the physical and legal types of custody of children. When a family court is asked to settle or handle disputes for the child, the Court will almost always appoint an Independent lawyer for the child. These lawyers have specific training in representing Children and they are familiar with these issues.
Many congressmen are lawyers by trade.

There are various types of lawyers but, I choose the type of lawyer that fits my circumstance.

A person can receive training to become a paralegal within three months, however it takes years of training to become a lawyer. Lawyers have a lot more responsibilities than paralegals.
A four-year college degree plus three years of law school are the basic educational requirements for lawyers. After formal training candiates must pass a stringent bar examination.
