As in all modern electronic devices, a microscopically thin layer of silicon dioxide is grown as an insulator and passivator over the silicon of integrated circuits and discrete transistors. This process was developed in 1959 by Fairchild Semiconductor for use in their Planar Process for making silicon transistors and immediately spread throughout the industry, permitting use of inexpensive plastic packaging for semiconductor devices for the first time.

Silicon oxide polymers are also in the silicone rubber parts that seal the case and keyboard from moisture.

What is the threshold voltage of silicon and germanium?

In semiconductor uses, such as diodes and transistors, the forward voltage drop for Silicon (Si) is a little less than 0.7 volts, while the FVD for Germanium (Ge) is about 0.3 volts.

What is the difference between landline phones and mobile phones?

landline phones can only be used near their holder, or in the house or place they are connected to, but mobile phones can be used almost anywhere providing you have enough credit (money to use on phone) to make calls and send texts. only mobile phones can send texts and images. mobile phones also need to be charged regularly to keep the battery power filled up. when the battery power runs out, the phone instantly turns itself off. there is a gauge in the corner of the screen that tels you how mucch battery power is left. the more bars of power, the better.

Silicon uses in electronics?

Silicon is used in electronics as a semi-conductor. All of the processing units in computers now use silicon to keep parts from causing electrical signals from passing from part to part unless it is meant to. Silicon is also used in the making of transistors.

Was Germanium used in transistors?

Yes, germanium was the only material used in transistors from when they were invented in 1947 until 1954 when the first successful silicon transistor was made. However the use of germanium still dominated transistors until the silicon mesa transistor was made commercially available by Fairchild Semiconductor in 1958. Development of the silicon planar transistor by Fairchild Semiconductor the next year ultimately made the integrated circuit possible. While almost all transistors today are silicon, there are still uses for germanium transistors so a few types are still made.

Why High frequency reduce the size and weight of components?

The concept is, greater the frequency less will be the size of antenna and weight. For example the Mobile Phone uses the half wave dipoles antenna. There is no exact formula for calculating these antennas. The problem is that there are several factors that affect the antenna. Fortunately there is a starting formula for these types of antennas. For center fed, wire dipole antennas, the formula is length of antenna = 468/freq (MHz). Mobile phone in GSM working on the frequencies 900 MHz and 1800 MHz so put the values in the formula you get your answer. If you move further in the frequency band the size will be more small.
