The Navy enforces US foreign policy and ensures the freedom of the seas to friendly fishing, merchant, and naval vessels, and denies access to the seas (including blockading and mining ports) to enemy shipping during time of war. Also during war time, the Navy, in concert with the Marines, is responsible for effecting amphibious assaults on foreign territory. The Navy also works in concert with the Air Force to deny the enemy the use of air space over his territory, to destroy enemy military assets, and to protect US assets on land and sea. The Navy works in concert with the Army providing pinpoint accurate calls for fire on enemy targets using naval shore bombardment. The Submarine service is charged with seeking and destroying enemy submarines, and impressing potential enemies with the inevitability of nuclear retaliation in the case the US is similarly attacked. The Navy also assists in search and rescue operations in international waters, and occasionally assists refugees at sea. The comparatively recent encounter with the Somali pirates was well within the Navy's job description. The Navy also undertakes intelligence gathering and intelligence evaluation and dissemination.
