The "Sportsman" is the Model 58. It was made from 1956 - 1962 and was the first gas operated automatic that Remington made. It was replaced by the Model 1100 in 1963. A variation is the 878, that uses a similar gas system. the model 58 utilized a L/H gas control knob that was also the magazine tube cap.
