The answer questions about how humans function in somewhat predictable ways. If one studies how a person behaves and takes into consideration their habits past behaviors and social background, one can make more accurate predictions on human function.

Psychology specifically is good at describing, explaining, predicting, and controlling behavior.

For example one could describe schizophrenia and the symptoms/behaviors associated with it. Then they would explain why it occurs. Thirdly it can be predicted pretty accurately how that person is going to behave. The key is controling and preventing the maladaptive behavior.

This can be applied to all maladaptive behavior, mental illnesses, addictions, etc. It is extremely influential and productive.

Sociology is also important as it studies groups of people. For example it can study and look at "gay culture" and draw conclusions to the effects of oppression. The results are more mental illnesses, suicides, drug abuse, etc. This is a result of oppression.

Other groups can also be studied to highlight key issues that occur to specific Demographics that are often a result of racism, stereotypes, and prejudices. Knowing the problems and identifying why they are occurring is key to coming up and putting into action effective solutions.

Social sciences are science because they use the scientific method to collect data. They are extremely important to gauging human functioning and optimizing how humans run their lives.
