It is tempting to suggest that one of the values of the goth subculture that separates it from the dominant culture is pretentiousness, but that wouldn't be true as the dominant culture is absorbed in a pretentiousness of it's own kind. A dominant pretentiousness pervades the dominant culture but the goth subculture embraces their pretense to flamboyant heights. The subculture is less about values and more about mood and aesthetic than values and politics. The goth subculture as a whole is surprisingly apolitical in their general behavior. They claim to advocate individualism but all dress the same, even in their differences, they are dark and moody, brooding and sullen in their attitude and their style of dress. They model their fashion tastes after villainous vampires and other such morbid creatures but idealize themselves as Byronic Heroes. They affect boredom as if they wouldn't be bored without all the affectation, they religiously remain faithful to the goth rock bands that cater to them and, with the exception of heavy Catholic imagery, they remain remarkably irreligious.

They suffer the misconceptions and the indignities of misunderstanding by the dominant culture but they endure. Whatever their values, they are different from the dominant culture and thus a subculture that has steadily grown in numbers and seems to thrive where other subcultures have long since faded into obscurity. They are unified by their sense of style, their leanings toward intellectualism, their obsession with all thing Gothic and blessed with an entire genre of rock bands who sing their praises. A movement that embraced pretense has become actuality and in that very real sense, they remain just as bored today as they were when they began pretending and perhaps that is the unifying value behind the goth subculture, they tragically endure their boredom.

The goth subculture values individuality, self-expression, and embracing the darker aspects of life such as death and melancholy. Goths often appreciate creativity, non-conformity, and a sense of community that allows for open-mindedness and acceptance of diverse perspectives and identities.
