Turn the flywheel to BDC (bottom dead center) as you continue to turn the flywheel into the combustion stroke, it will be the first valve to move.

Chalwyn valves can be attached to a diesel engine air intake system. The valve is designed to safely shutdown the engine in the event of external vapours or gasses being sucked into the engine through the air intake. In areas where there is a chance of vapour ignition a chalwyn valve will normally be specified by the site owner.

Briggs doesn't publish engine compression specs, but 120 is good. 100 is okay. 80 is lousy.

the intake valve is bigger
Briggs says on a cold engine, .005 on intake & .007 on exhaust. Wider on exhaust to ensure you don't burn a valve.
