A republic is a form of government in which power comes from the people. This form of government is ruled by elected leaders.
Only the government of the Roman Republic (509-27 B.C.) had checks and balances. The government of the monarchy (753-509 B.C.) and of rule by emperors (27 B.C.-476 B.C.) did not. During the Roma republic officer of state of the same rank could veto each other and higher officers could veto the lower officers. This was to avoid abuse of power.

The United States of America is a Republic. A republic has the basic principle that attempts to keep the populace from changing all (supreme power). A republic has Law which is supreme (the US Constitution is constantly being disobeyed. A republic also has the rule of the One, the President, the Few, the Senate, and the Many, the Representatives. Thus through a series of checks and balances in the US government one branch can't get ultimate. Let us pray that we never have a dictator.

The system of government in the United States is a democratic, constitutional republic. Outlined in the U.S. Constitution there are three branches of government; the Executive, the Legislative and the Judicial. Each branch of government has certain constitutional authorities and powers. The powers of each branch serve as a mechanism for "checks and balances" which empowers the American Democracy.
