According to the United Nations Environment Programme, Africa's deforestation is two times faster than the world rate, with potentially up to 90% of Africa's coastal rainforests disappearing between 1990 and now. But, why? One reason is more people needing places to live, cutting down trees for supplies to build houses and making more land available to build houses on. Another cause of deforestation in Africa is cutting trees down for the creation of products, like palm oil from palm trees, paper and furniture. In Africa, palm oil specifically is also having the effect of threatening Great Ape habitats. A third cause of deforestation in Africa is the continents, and many developing countries, reliance on wood for cooking fuel. In fact, it's estimated that 90% of the African population uses wood for this. In Sub-Saharan Africa in particular, firewood and brush account for about 52% of the total local energy sources.
