Many who lived in those countries had never known freedom or democracy because they were under sixty years old. Some could remember WWII but most only knew the oppression of communism. They had to learn how to be free. Now they have a European Union to promote the welfare of twenty seven countries. Several countries still have applications in to join the EU. Laos, Viet Nam, China, and North Korea remain under the yoke of communism.
