just a small handful of answers to this question are they didn't have as many men and they had less men. Also many of them had to sleep on the frozen ground and they had little or no warm clothing. some soldiers stood on guard wrapped in only blankets. they had no shoes and so they wrapped bits of cloth around their feet. another problem is the soldiers got frostbite and disease from this bitter cold.
