If you are frying them upon or right after installation, disconnect the negative battery cable before installing the alternator and then reconnect it afterwards. Frying them during driving is a whole other problem. Get your charging system checked. Could be a relay or short.
To remove the alternator on 1988 Honda CRX the negative battery must first be disconnected. The belt needs to be loosen and the mounting bolts need to be removed as well. When unmounted the alternator will slide off, and a new unit can be replaced.

You need to drop the driveshaft out of the car on the drivers side. Once you do that you can get to it a little bit easier.
the alternator is about $80-95. i had to replace mine like 3 times. Its not difficult but very time consuming and cramped space.
Remove your air cleaner housing, left front tire. unplug and unbolt your alternator and remove it up throw the air cleaner area.
Might have slight differences. They are both in the 4th gen or EF class of civic. 88-91.

Disconnect the 1988 Century battery. Remove the alternator battery. Disconnect the alternator wiring, then unbolt the alternator. Bolt in the new alternator, then reverse the procedure to finish the installation.
Check the fuses, they could be fried.
I have not tried this ...but looks very possible . Remove the air cleaner housing and tube . Think that there is 3 bolts to remove from the alternator . disconnect alt wiring .Move alt to pass side of car ...and lift up .
