Tobacco. :D

At one time it was easily Cotton - but that diminished in importance by around the time of the Civil War - as demonstrated by the reluctance of the European countries to assist the Confederacy in order to restore shipments of Southern Cotton to Europe.

Crops like soybeans and sorghum have surged in importance in the Southern US states.

Grain crops like corn and wheat which dominate as cash crops in the Midwest are still important in the South, but not as much so as Tobacco, Cotton, soybeans, and sorghum. The top one varies from year to year depending on commodity prices.
