Types of WAN

Leased Line: It is the most expensive of all types and also the most secure. It uses a point to point connection from the WAN hub to the specific LAN point. This option is used by most big software corporations as not only does it offer superior security features but also higher data transfer rate. It uses the PPP(Point to point protocol), the HNAS, the HDLC or SDLC protocol. They are all specialized protocol mechanisms designed for security and error-free operation.

Circuit Switching: These are relatively cheaper connections and rely on making a physical circuit path between two points. The dial up connections are examples of such type. They use the landline telephone infrastructure for data transmission. The speed offered is usually 30 Kbps to 150 Kbps. The protocols used are PPP or ISDN.

Packet Switching: They use dynamic circuit paths with single point to multiple point linking. The data is sliced into variable sized packets irrespective of its type. Varying types of data use the same media link and therefore there is congestion and queuing delays in delivery. It uses the X.25 Frame relay protocol which is one of the first protocols ever developed.

Cell Relay: This is quite similar in structure to packet switching type but divides data into equally sized packets or cells. It is supposed to be very efficient for synchronous voice and video transmission and gives amazing clarity. It uses the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer mode) protocol.

Wireless WAN

WAN technology has also taken the step to the next level of network integration which is based on the mobile phone platform. It provides internet connectivity through the wireless telecommunication mode and is called Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN). It is a part of the third generation (3G) mobile technologies that are being offered. It takes advantage of the advances in mobile technology and the development of mobile infrastructure to deliver high quality and high speed Internet access. The routing mechanisms and protocols for this new technology are different.

Thus, WAN has taken communication to a new level and opened up a torrent of information and possibilities placing immense power at our hands. Today, thanks to this technology, you can stay in touch with anybody across the world. It has brought the world to your fingertips. One who can learn to wield this new technology and harness its powers, has only the sky as the limit!

Dude....that's communication switching technique and NOTtypes of wan.The question was "What are the types of WAN connections?" and not 'communication'...
Types of WAN Connections are:

PSTN : Public Switch Telephone Network features are a) Low Speed b) Restricted bandwidth allocation c) Analog Nature of Transmission d) widespread availability.
Basically designed for Telephone but can be use for data communication with the help of the MODEM.The cost of setting up this type of WAN is high usually coz connection lasts for a considerable time, but can be obtained at a short notice.Used for FAX machines.

PSDN : Public Switch Data Networks and the feature are a) High Reliability b) High Quality of connection C) Provide high and low speed at appropriate costs.
It is used for network connection provided for connecting computer of one organisation to other organisations.

Value Added Service : This is used when a provider processes, stores and manipulates the data that is to be carried on to the network this is called adding value to the data.Companies in the same lines use this type of WAN.In India Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. is one such organisation using this type of WAN.

Integrated Services Digital Network : These are basically used for Digital Transmission for the integration of Voice,Video and Data transmission with the Help of Switching and message technique.(Message technique does not require a dedicated path (Like in Circuit Technique) between the sender and receiver, the Destination address is appended to the data which passing from one node to the other in a network reaches the Destination.) This is used by the telephone network [they were dreaming for a very long time and I suppose their dreams have come true].
Like the idea of connecting Telephone line to a Digital Media (PC) for the network access?

Private Networks : This,as the name suggests, are used by the private (basically Leased) network owners, as a link to be served by the network. They can use it for High-Speed Data Transfer or for Large quantity of Data transfer.

N ya one more thing both Message switching's and Circuit Switching's advantages are inherited by Packet Switching...
