The answer would have to depend on how you define success. All empires have risen, been more or less successful then declined and broken up. As an eventual 'force for good' in the world, the old British Empire has transformed into the Commonwealth, which has considerable standing and influence, usually benign, in the world, so you might want to call that success.
Historians tend to see anything before Medieval Times as Ancient.
