Two of the more important structures of the limbic system are the hippocampus which is necessary for converting short-term to long-term memory Also the amygdala which ties memories together with emotion. the portions of the limbic system also allow us to know that we are holding something ie: a key in our hand without looking at it. It is important to realize that the limbic system comprises many different structures that are needed for day to day living.

It's not really a structure. The thalamus and the hypothalamus are associated with parts of the cerebral cortex and deep nuclei of the cerebrum to form a complex known as the limbic system. the limbic system is involved in memory and in emotions such as sadness, happiness, anger and fear. It seems to regulate emotional behavior, especially behavior that enhances survival.
