What area did christopher Columbus sail to?

Columbus had wanted to find a water route to Asia, but ended up on an island called Hispaniola. This was a small island off the coast of Porto Rico with a tribe of Native Americans. He thought he had landed in India. Hence, the name "Indians." His trip was very unsuccessful and the King/Queen were not happy when he returned. He had promised gold for the treasury and came back with no gold. In his 4 total trips he made he was a total failure and on his last trip he was shipwrecked for over 2 years before he was saved. He died a broken unhappy man leaving his son to file a suit against the crown. His son never did gain all that was promised his father.
