Even at it's peak the Byzantine Empire wan't very large, but its borders were constantly being compromised by nomadic Turkic horsemen, but even more so by the Ottoman Empire. Eventually, all that all that remained of the Byzantine Empire was the city of Constantinople, which was eventually sacked by the Ottoman Empire in 1453 under Sultan Mehmed II.
