The current three counties that make up today's Oklahoma Panhandle were stripped from Texas when it sought admission as a slave state into the Union. They were located North of the Free versus slave state boundary that had been set by the US Congress after long and acrimonious debate. Texas would be admitted to the Union, but first it had to shed itself of ownership of land that forbade slavery. For a considerable period of time it was truly a No Man's land that was not claimed or controlled by Kansas, Nebraska or Oklahoma and it became a haven for every form of crook, bandit and swindler available.
