Washington's first military service was as major in the Virginia Militia in 1752, when he was 20 years old he soon saw action in the French and Indian War. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1754. He resigned his commission in late 1754 but returned to the service the next year and was promoted to colonel and regimental commander. He left the service in 1758 in order to serve in the House of Burgesses . He became active in politics and a leader in the move for independence. When the Revolutionary War began in 1775 Washington was chosen by the Continental Congress to be Commander-in-Chief of all colonial forces and he remained in that position until Cornwallis surrendered to him in 1783.
