Christ held the law and the writings of the prophets in high regard.-- Matthew 5:17-19

Early Christians did also. -- 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:21

Answer:

Their attitude was one of reverence.

What we call the "Old Testament" today... was the "entire Bible" in their day.

It's doubtful that Paul and others of the "early church" suspected that their subsequent writings would be canonized into something called the "New Testament... much less imagining something called the "printing press."

It probably never occurred to most if not all of them that Isaiah's prophecy regarding the "completion" of God's Word was about them:

"...Bind up [confine] the testimony, seal[to close up; complete] the law among My disciples." (Isa.8:16)

To them, the Old Testament was "God's Word" -- period.
