The original owner\'s manual calls for Dex III automatic Transmission Fluid. However, this ATF is no longer made. Therefore, it is important to use a high quality fluid to extend the life of the vehicle. Maxlife is one good option that is not very expensive and is available at most all auto part stores. The important thing is to make sure your fluid is full and that your vehicle is serviced regularly.
The recommended automatic transmission fluid for a 2000 Subaru Outback Legacy is Subaru ATF HP. This is a proprietary fluid which is sold by local dealerships.

The 2001 Subaru all back transmission dipstick is located behind the engine, in the engine compartment. The transmission dipstick should have a yellow handle.
For an automatic transmission, a drain using the plug in the left side of the transmission pan takes around 4 quarts to refill. It is recommended that you do this at least once a year. Dexron III is what you buy at the store. --Ken
In 2003 I believe that they still recommended Dexron III for automatic transmissions. Check your owner's manual. Newer Subarus (2005 and up) use a special fluid that is generally only available from Subaru.
The 2013 Subaru Outback has a 6-speed manual.
