The saying is "Match the Hatch". Look around at the insects that are out at that time and try to match the look.

Keep it fairly small. It really depends on the river. Large and deep or more shallow. Small minnow sized baits will work, as well.

Let the bait flow naturally past rocks (fish hide behind them) or swim it like it's hurt (they like the easy prey).

One of ther best artificial lures to use in a lake is a Texas rigged worm or lizard. Berkley power baits makes both kind and in a number of colors, a popular one is "tequila sunrise". "Pumpkin seed" is a good one as well as "red shad", and a hot one is the "blue fleck/ firetail". While fishing those lakes, keep in mind that some fish like different things, so throw some spinnerbaits, or some crankbaits as well. But always remember that nothing beats live bait.

It depends on the species you are fishing for. Catfish like chicken liver,bait fish, dough baits and worms. Trout and salmon like fish eggs.
