Following the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775) during the American Revolutionary War, British General Henry Clinton remarked in his diary that "A few more such victories would have shortly put an end to British dominion in America."
This remark was a paraphrase of a much earlier (279 BC) remark by King Pyrrhus of Epirus following the battles at Heraclea and Asculum during the Pyrrhic War. The king's armies defeated the Romans, but in the process sustained devastating losses.
