The battle showed that it was going to be bloody and dirty. Men threw down their guns and ran from the field. The idea before the battle was that war was glorious and it would be a short war. This was wrong on both counts.
With regards to the US Civil War, soldiers traveled mostly by foot. Marching to battle and other locations was the normal way of getting from one place to another. Of course if the distance was going to be a long one, then railroads, riverboats, wagons and ocean going vessels were used. And, of course the cavalry traveled by horseback.
