Despite Grant's capture of both Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, critics wanted someone to blame for the massive losses on both sides with no visible area gained. Depressed, he came close to resigning and possibly changing the outcome of the war However, his friend, General Sherman convinced him to stay and the rest is history.
